Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and similar aromatic compounds from plants, for the purpose of improving a person's mood, cognitive function or health. Preliminary scientific evidence is growing that aromatherapy is beneficial in all these areas and can be used in combination with other forms of holistic remedies without any contra-indications.

Because many essential oils are potent antimicrobials, they can be useful in the treatment of infectious disease, pain management, anxiety/depression, and various other conditions.

While precise knowledge of the synergy between the body and aromatic oils is not yet established, some preliminary clinical studies show positive effects, certainly with regards to enhancing relaxation and clarity of mind.

Aromatherapy has several modes of application including:

  • Aerial diffusion: for environmental fragrancing or aerial disinfection
  • Direct inhalation: for respiratory disinfection, decongestion, expectoration as well as psychological effects
  • Topical application: for general massage, bathing, compresses, therapeutic skin care
